The 2026 Sale Airshow was an absolute sensory overload for aviation and photography lovers alike — the kind of event where your shutter finger ends up needing physiotherapy by lunchtime, I shot 8500pics on the first day alone and will be editing properly at some point :D
Between the razor-sharp precision of the Royal Australian Air Force Roulettes carving perfect geometry across the Gippsland sky, the sheer aggression and control of Red Bull Air Racing world champion Matt Hall Racing tearing through aerobatic sequences, and the energy of Paul Bennet Airshows with their warbirds and formation flying, there was barely a moment to lower the camera.
The light constantly shifted from hard metallic reflections to soft late-afternoon glow, creating endless opportunities to freeze motion, prop blur, vapour trails and raw emotion in a single frame. I'll be talking more about this in a coming post.
Airshows like Sale are a strange mix of chaos and choreography — one second you’re tracking an aircraft at impossible speed, the next you’re standing there grinning like a kid because aircraft just shook your ribcage from 500 feet away. For photographers, it’s not just about planes; it’s about timing, anticipation, atmosphere and trying to bottle the feeling of flight itself into a photograph.
